Research inclusion
Inclusion is at the heart of our work. It shapes how we plan, design, and carry out research. Inclusive research recognises that different people have different experiences, and these should be reflected in every part of the research process.
Why inclusion matters
Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion leads to better, fairer research. Dementia affects people in different ways, across communities, identities, and life circumstances. By including a wide range of voices, we:
- Making research more relevant, ethical and person-centred
- Challenging assumptions about who can take part and contribute
- Reduce health inequalities in access to care, treatment and research opportunities
- Create safer, more welcoming spaces for collaboration
Inclusion starts with each of us
We all have a part to play. It means noticing how we show up, who we include, and who we might be leaving out. We all carry assumptions, often unnoticed but our actions are not. Inclusion doesn’t happen by accident. It is something we with intent and care. It means:
- Creating welcoming, accessible, and respectful environments
- Being open to unlearning and doing things differently
- Listening to people with lived experience, especially those historically excluded
- Appreciating what each person brings and offering support that reflects that
Building inclusion into practice
Inclusion is now a condition of NIHR funding. all research must show how it will address inequality.
We can do this by:
- Involving people from diverse backgrounds early and often
- Recognising intersecting inequalities (e.g. disability, ethnicity, language, poverty)
- Supporting training and reflection for researchers to grow inclusive practice
- Making sure roles, opportunities and access are equitable
- Removing barriers to participation and progression
- Planning for access, communication and flexibility
Key considerations
- Diversity is not just about demographics, it’s about experience, identity, and power.
- Inclusion is ongoing work. It must be built into planning, budgeting, training, and everyday practice.
- Reflection is vital. Take time to explore how your own position affects the way you engage with others.
