Language

Words matter. Words shape how we see ourselves and each other. In dementia research, language can unintentionally reinforce stigma or make people feel excluded.

Avoid language that:

  • Feels overly medical, academic, or detached
  • Implies blame or burden (e.g., “suffering,” “decline,” “burden,” or “prevention”)
  • Labels people as problems or passive subjects

Take time to reflect on:

  • What do we mean by terms like “involvement,” “impact,” or “co-production”?
  • Do people in the room share this understanding?

Create language together. Ask for feedback on what terms feel meaningful and be open to evolving how you speak and write. It is important to note that the word ‘Dementia’ itself can carry different meanings or negative connotations across languages and cultures, sometimes being seen as offensive or linked to mental illness for example. It’s important to avoid assumptions and seek guidance to use language that is respectful within each community.
