From strong roots to shared growth: Nurturing understanding and partnership in dementia research
The Dementia TREE
TREE grew from a shared commitment to strengthen public involvement in dementia research, bringing together people living with dementia, carers, and researchers to learn from one another and support meaningful involvement.
Through a national survey and structured conversations, we gathered insights about current approaches: what works well, key learnings, and what is missing. This highlighted both the depth of existing knowledge and a strong enthusiasm to share and connect. Contributors called for better dialogue around dementia and research and for more relational, values-based approaches, rather than processes driven solely by institutional frameworks.
From these insights, the metaphor of a tree of knowledge emerged. Its roots represent the shared values that sustain involvement; its branches reflect the practicalities of working together; and its leaves and fruit symbolise the growth of knowledge, relationships, and understanding that come from collaboration.
The TREE website grew from this shared learning. Grounded in the values of Trust, Respect, Empathy, and Experience, we hope the resource will grow with you: start with reflection on the roots (values), explore the branches (practical guidance), and see your involvement develop in the leaves and fruit (knowledge, partnerships, understanding).
TREE is not static. Through our feedback and FAQ sections, you can share what would help your practice grow, adding new roots and branches to our shared tree of knowledge.
